The existence form of silicon and iron in ferrosilicon
Silicon and iron in ferrosilicon exist mainly in the form of alloys. Ferrosilicon is an alloy composed of silicon and iron. It is made by smelting raw materials such as coke, steel scraps and quartz (or silica) in an electric furnace. In this process, silicon and iron elements combine to form an iron-silicon alloy, which has the function of deoxidation and raising the temperature, so it is often used in the steelmaking industry. In ferrosilicon alloys, silicon and iron do not exist as separate elements, but form chemical bonds that together constitute the crystal structure of the alloy.
Since silicon can react with oxygen to form silicon dioxide (SiO2), ferrosilicon becomes an effective deoxidizer. In the steelmaking process, adding ferrosilicon can remove oxygen from the molten steel, and the generated silicon dioxide will release a lot of heat, which not only helps deoxidation, but also increases the temperature of the molten steel, thereby improving the quality of the steel.
