Fesi Ferrosilicon (commonly abbreviated as FeSi) is an iron-silicon alloy that also contains smaller proportions of other elements. The most commonly used grade of silicon iron contains 75 wt% silicon ('FeSi75'), but the content can vary between 15-90 wt% depending on the application.

 

The highest quality Fesi Ferrosilicon is produced in an electric arc furnace, where silicon dioxide is reduced with coke in the presence of iron (usually scrap steel or iron ore). Fesi Ferrosilicon is typically found in lustrous, metallic gray blocks, but it is also available in pre-fabricated spherical shapes.

Fuel - Some steel mills add Fesi Ferrosilicon to the melt, which can introduce heat into the furnace through combustion, thus reducing energy costs.
