The raw materials for industrial production of ferrotitanium include ilmenite concentrate (Fe-TiO3), rutile (TiO2), titanium dioxide (TiO2) and scrap titanium metal materials (Ti, Ti-V-Al, etc.), except for scrap titanium metal materials , must be reduced with a reducing agent to obtain ferrotitanium and titanium alloys.
TiO2 is a relatively difficult oxide to reduce. Reduction of TiO2 with carbon is only possible at high temperatures and produces TiC instead of Ti. High carbon ferrotitanium is obtained. It is impossible to reduce TiO2 with silicon, but adding CaO as a flux can promote the silicon reduction reaction. Titanium and silicon form stable silicides, which are beneficial to the silicon reduction reaction, but the ferrotitanium produced contains high silicon content.
