Characteristics of ferro titanium
Physical properties
Color and Luster: Ilmenite typically exhibits colors of iron black or steel gray, with a streak of steel gray or black. When containing hematite inclusions, it may display brownish or reddish-brown hues. It possesses metallic to semi-metallic luster and a conchoidal or sub-conchoidal fracture.
Hardness and Density: Hardness ranges from 5 to 6, with a density range of 4.4 to 5 g/cm³. The density increases as the content of MgO in the composition decreases or the content of FeO increases.
Magnetic Properties: Titanomagnetite exhibits weak magnetic properties.
Solubility: Dissolves readily in hydrofluoric acid and slowly in hot hydrochloric acid.

Structure and Morphology of ferro titanium
Crystal Structure: Ilmenite belongs to the trigonal crystal system and is rarely found in crystal form, often appearing as irregular grains, scaly, tabular, or flaky. The lattice parameters are a = 5.09 Å and c = 14.09 Å, with six formula units per unit cell.
Productive Environment: Titanomagnetite is widely distributed in various rock bodies, especially in mafic and acidic rocks. In pegmatites, titanomagnetite grains are larger, reaching several centimeters. When the ore-bearing parent rock is destroyed by weathering, titanomagnetite can be transferred to sand ore.
Chemical properties
Chemical composition: The main chemical composition is FeTiO3.
Weather resistance: As a weather-resistant mineral, ilmenite remains stable at very high temperatures but transforms into rutile under higher pressure.

Industrial Applications of ferro titanium
Titanium Extraction: Titanium iron ore is one of the important sources for extracting titanium. Titanium can be extracted from titanium iron ore through various metallurgical methods such as the Kroll process or the Hunter process.
Pigment Production: Titanium from rutile can be converted into titanium dioxide through further processing, which is a commonly used white pigment.
Aerospace: Due to its high strength, low density, and good corrosion resistance, titanium extracted from ilmenite is widely used in the aerospace industry, such as in the production of cosmic rockets and missiles.
Geological significance
Deposit Type: Titanium iron ore is often found with magnetite and rutile and is one of the important titanium deposit types.
