1.The initial form of ferro titanium 40 is ilmenite, which is an opaque black mineral with a somewhat heavy, medium hardness and submetallic luster. It almost always occurs on a large scale, and thick plate-like crystals are very rare. It does not show significant cleavage, but rather a shell-like to jagged fracture.
2.The predecessor of ferro titanium 40, pure ilmenite, is paramagnetic and has a very weak attraction to magnets, but ilmenite forms a solid solution with hematite, and hematite has weak ferromagnetism, so it is obviously attracted to magnets. Natural deposits of ilmenite often contain symbiotic or dissolved magnetite, which also contributes to its ferromagnetism.
3.Ferro titanium 40 is derived from ilmenite. Whereas, ilmenite is distinguished from hematite by its less intense black and darker appearance with black streaks, whereas it is distinguished from magnetite by its weaker magnetism. In thin sections of rock, ilmenite is brownish, slightly pinkish or purple. The mineral has a pronounced double reflectivity and is pleochroic. In orthogonal polarizers, ilmenite is highly anisotropic and its interference color ranges from gray to brownish-gray.
