Natural deposits of ilmenite often contain symbiotic or dissolved magnetite, which also contributes to its ferromagnetism.

Whereas, ilmenite is distinguished from hematite by its less intense black and darker appearance with black streaks, whereas it is distinguished from magnetite by its weaker magnetism. In thin sections of rock, ilmenite is brownish, slightly pinkish or purple. The mineral has a pronounced double reflectivity and is pleochroic. In orthogonal polarizers, ilmenite is highly anisotropic and its interference color ranges from gray to brownish-gray.
