Description

Silicon carbide (SiC) is a compound formed from silicon (Si) and carbon (C) with very high hardness, thermal stability and wear resistance. It is an important industrial material widely used in refractories, abrasives, semiconductor and electronic industries.

Silicon Carbide characteristics

1. High hardness:
- Silicon carbide's hardness is second only to diamond, with a Mohs hardness of 9.5, so it is commonly used in the manufacture of high-strength abrasives, cutting tools and wear-resistant materials.

2. High thermal conductivity:
- Silicon carbide has excellent thermal conductivity and can maintain good thermal conductivity in high-temperature environments, making it suitable for use as a refractory material and a component of high-temperature equipment.

3. High temperature resistance:
- Silicon carbide has a very high melting point of about 2700°C and remains stable at high temperatures, making it widely used in high-temperature furnace linings, smelting furnaces and other refractory materials.

4. Chemical stability:
- Silicon carbide is resistant to acids, alkalis and other chemicals, making it suitable for use as a corrosion-resistant material in the chemical industry.

5. Good semiconductor properties:
- Silicon carbide is one of the important semiconductor materials with wide bandgap (about 3.0 eV), high electric field breakdown strength and high thermal conductivity, which makes it widely used in electronic devices under high power, high frequency and high temperature conditions.

Silicon carbide applications

1. Refractory materials:
- Silicon carbide is widely used in the manufacture of refractory materials such as high-temperature furnace linings, kiln furniture, and furnace flooring because of its excellent high-temperature and chemical resistance. It can also be used in the production of heat-resistant vessels, crucibles and other products.

2. Abrasives:
- Due to the high hardness and abrasion resistance of silicon carbide, it is widely used in the manufacture of abrasives such as grinding tools, grinding wheels and whetstones, which are used to polish and cut materials such as metal, stone, glass and ceramics.

3. Semiconductors and electronics:
- As a wide bandgap semiconductor material, silicon carbide is widely used in the manufacture of high-power, high-temperature, and high-frequency electronic devices such as power switches, diodes, and high-frequency converters.SiC-based power devices offer higher efficiency and durability than conventional silicon-based devices.

4. Automotive and aerospace:
- In the automotive field, SiC is used to manufacture highly wear-resistant parts such as brake discs and clutches for automobiles. In the aerospace field, SiC's lightweight and high-temperature-resistant properties make it an ideal material for high-temperature structural components and engine parts.

5. Photovoltaic industry:
- Silicon carbide is also widely used in solar cell manufacturing, especially for polysilicon cutting process, SiC can significantly improve cutting efficiency and reduce production costs.

6. Ceramic materials:
- Silicon carbide can be used as a reinforcing body material, widely used in the preparation of composite ceramic materials, to enhance the mechanical properties and wear resistance of ceramics.
