Vanadium is a refractory rare metal with high melting point. Vanadium is a moderately active metal, which is better than most stainless steels in gas resistance, salt resistance and water corrosion resistance. And vanadium has many excellent physical and chemical properties, so it is widely used. 98% of the known vanadium reserves in the world are produced in vanadium titanomagnetite.
Different contents of metallic vanadium have different properties. For example, in order to improve the strength, toughness, ductility and heat resistance of steel, about 85% of metal vanadium is added to steel production in the form of ferrovanadium and vanadium-nitrogen alloy. About 90% of the vanadium consumed in the world is used in the steel industry. Adding ferrovanadium to cast iron can improve the hardness, wear resistance and tensile strength of castings. It is also used in aircraft engines, aerospace cabin skeletons, missiles, steam turbine blades, rocket engine shells and so on. Vanadium steel armor-piercing projectile can penetrate 40 cm thick steel plate. In the chemical field, vanadium is mainly used as a catalyst for manufacturing sulfuric acid and vulcanized rubber, and also used to inhibit the generation of nitrous oxide in power plants. In recent years, ferrovanadium has been used to make permanent magnets.
There are more than 70 kinds of vanadium minerals, but there are few single vanadium deposits, all of which coexist with other minerals. The mined raw materials contain low vanadium, so it is necessary to use hydrometallurgy: firstly, vanadium pentoxide is extracted from these raw materials, and then vanadium pentoxide is smelted into ferrovanadium and vanadium additives. In addition, vanadium is also used to produce rechargeable hydrogen batteries or vanadium redox batteries.
