Basic Properties and Uses of Magnesium

Uses of magnesium metal
Magnesium has a wide range of industrial and health applications:
Industrial uses:
Lightweight alloy manufacturing: magnesium-aluminum alloys are used in automotive components (e.g., steering wheel skeletons), aerospace parts (e.g., aircraft fuselages), and electronics housings to reduce weight by up to 30% while maintaining strength. Metallurgical reducing agent: acts as a reducing agent in the extraction of high-melting-point metals such as titanium and zirconium (e.g., Crowell's method for titanium production). Desulfurizer for iron and steel smelting: removes sulfur impurities from steel to improve steel quality; also used in ductile iron casting. Pyrotechnic and signaling devices: Magnesium powder emits a strong white light when burned and is widely used in fireworks, flares, and early photographic flashes. Nuclear energy materials: used as fuel cladding for nuclear reactors due to their low neutron absorption properties. Emerging Technologies: Magnesium-based hydrogen storage materials and degradable medical magnesium alloys (e.g., orthopedic implants) are being commercialized.

Magnesium is a typical alkaline earth metal element, belonging to the metal category with the chemical symbol Mg, with metallic conductivity, ductility and reactivity.
It may cause an explosion under certain conditions:
Dust explosion risk: magnesium powder mixed with air (concentration 10-25 mg / liter), when the ignition source or static electricity will violently explode, releasing a large amount of heat and hydrogen, destructive force. Risk of explosion in contact with water: When high temperature molten magnesium alloy or powder comes into contact with water, it reacts to generate magnesium hydroxide and hydrogen, if the concentration of accumulated hydrogen in the confined space exceeds 40 mg/m3, it is easy to trigger deflagration. Safety Protection: Production requires strict isolation of water sources, control of dust concentration and the use of Class D fire extinguishing agents (e.g. sand).
Magnesium prices soared to $320,000/ton in 2025 (historical low of $157,000), with major factors including:
Dramatic increase in production costs: Coal prices have risen from $600/ton to $1,100/ton, and ferrosilicon prices have risen from $5,700/ton to $10,000/ton, pushing up the cost of magnesium by nearly $10,000 per ton. Supply shrinks dramatically: China's environmental protection production restrictions (Yulin capacity utilization rate down to 65%), production in 2024 by 12%, and each ton of magnesium emits 20 tons of carbon dioxide exacerbated production restrictions. Demand explosion: magnesium usage for new energy vehicles increased from 3kg/vehicle to 15kg/vehicle (e.g. Tesla Model Y); aerospace usage increased to 12% (e.g. Boeing 787); emerging applications (hydrogen storage materials) expanding the gap. International trade impact: China accounts for 95% of global supply, but exports drop 30%, Europe and other stocks are in short supply, 2025 is expected to shortfall of 80,000 tons.
