Tungsten exhibits a body-centered cubic (bcc) lattice. It has the highest melting point of any metal, 3,410° C (6,170° F), and is highly conductive. Because of this unique combination of properties, it is widely used as a filament in incandescent lamps, electrical contacts, and as an electron emitter in electronic devices.

Tungsten is also widely used as an alloying element in tool steels and wear-resistant alloys. Tungsten carbide is used in cutting tools and hard facing materials because of its hardness and wear resistance. The metal is brittle at room temperature but ductile and strong at high temperatures. Its alloys are used in rocket engine nozzles and other aerospace applications.

The process of making tungsten rods is not complicated and difficult. Tungsten suppliers produce tungsten rods by grinding tungsten metal ore into a fine powder. The powder is then chemically treated to form tungsten oxide, which is heated to reduce the metal ore powder into pure tungsten powder.

This pure powder is placed into a mold and hydraulically pressed into a rod shape. Because the resulting rod is very brittle, the manufacturer must then sinter the rod. Sintering further binds the metal powder into the rod, preparing the rod for shipment to the manufacturer.

The chemical reactions and filtration associated with refining and achieving the desired purity level is a complex and precise process, but usually results in high-purity tungsten powder. Therefore, the particle size and shape of the powder can vary depending on the intended purpose. Sometimes it is used in powder form, but more often it is compressed and arranged into a solid form.

This consolidation involves a series of procedures related to high temperatures, electrical current, and a hydrogen atmosphere. During this process, the tungsten condenses and hardens, forming strips. At this point, the tungsten rod lacks the elasticity and strength levels required for manufacturing and must undergo further manipulation so that it can be rolled, drawn, or flattened into the final desired shape.

Subsequent processing typically involves pulling the tungsten rod through a die, rolling it through a rolling mill and applying high temperatures and electrical current.
