Silicon carbide, commonly known as silicon carbide, is a compound of silicon and carbon. Silicon carbide is a semiconductor material and an emerging material used in semiconductor devices.
Silicon carbide was discovered by Pennsylvania native Edward Acheson in 1891 and is one of the most important industrial ceramic materials. Played a key role in the Industrial Revolution and are still widely used today as abrasives and steel additives, as well as structural ceramics.
