Ferrovanadium Uses
Key Applications of Ferrovanadium in Metallurgy and Industry
Ferrovanadium (FeV) is a ferroalloy composed primarily of vanadium (typically 40–80%) and iron, with small amounts of other elements such as aluminum or silicon depending on production method. It is a critical alloying additive used to enhance the mechanical properties of steel and other metal systems.
Application Area
Function
High-Strength Steel
Increases tensile strength, toughness, and wear resistance
Tool Steel
Improves hardness and red-hot strength
HSLA Steels
Enhances strength-to-weight ratio for automotive/aerospace use
Rebar & Structural Steel
Provides microstructural refinement and toughness
Cast Iron
Modifies graphite structure and reduces brittleness
Superalloys
Used in nickel-based alloys for jet engines and turbines
In steelmaking, ferrovanadium is added during ladle treatment or furnace tapping to introduce vanadium, which forms stable nitrides and carbides. These precipitates refine grain size and impede dislocation movement, resulting in increased strength and toughness without significant loss of ductility.
Vanadium micro-alloying is especially valuable in high-strength low-alloy (HSLA) steels, enabling lighter, stronger components for transportation and construction industries. In tool steels, FeV raises cutting performance and heat resistance. Additionally, ferrovanadium is used in producing vanadium redox flow batteries, showcasing its expanding role in energy storage beyond traditional metallurgy.
Its ability to improve fatigue resistance and corrosion properties makes it indispensable in critical infrastructure projects and high-performance engineering applications.

Ferrovanadium Production
 Process Overview for Manufacturing Ferrovanadium
Ferrovanadium is produced mainly by two industrial routes: the aluminothermic process and the silicon-reduction (carbothermic) process. Both aim to reduce vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅) to metallic vanadium and combine it with iron.
Process
Raw Materials
Reaction Conditions
Vanadium Content
Aluminothermic
V₂O₅ + Al + Fe
High temp in refractory-lined reactor
40–80% V
Silicon-Reduction
V₂O₅ + Si + Fe
Electric arc furnace
50–80% V
Aluminothermic Process:
Vanadium pentoxide is mixed with aluminum powder and iron oxide/scrap iron. The mixture is ignited, initiating an exothermic reduction reaction:
3V₂O₅ + 10Al → 6V + 5Al₂O₃.
Iron is added to bind with vanadium, forming ferrovanadium alloy. The reaction generates enough heat to keep the process self-sustaining. Slag formed is removed after cooling.
Silicon-Reduction Process:
V₂O₅ is reduced in an electric arc furnace using ferrosilicon or silicon metal and iron. Reaction:
2V₂O₅ + 5Si → 4V + 5SiO₂.
The process allows better control of alloy composition and produces low-impurity FeV suitable for high-grade steel applications.
Both methods require strict control of temperature and reactant ratios to maximize yield and minimize impurities like phosphorus and sulfur. The molten ferrovanadium is tapped, cast into ingots or lumps, and may be crushed for metallurgical use. Modern plants employ gas cleaning systems to meet environmental standards.

Ferrovanadium HS Code
International Customs Classification for Ferrovanadium Trade
Ferrovanadium is classified under the Harmonized System (HS) codes used globally for customs declaration and trade regulation. The correct HS code ensures proper tariff application and statistical tracking.
HS Code
Description
Notes
7202.92
Ferrovanadium
Includes alloys with 40–80% vanadium content
7202.99
Other ferroalloys (not elsewhere specified)
May apply if composition differs
Specifically, HS Code 7202.92 covers ferrovanadium containing mainly vanadium and iron, with typical V content ranging from 40% to 80%. This code falls under Chapter 72, which deals with iron and steel products.
Countries may append additional digits for statistical purposes (e.g., 7202.9200 in the U.S. HTS system or 7202.92.00.00 in EU TARIC). Importers and exporters should verify national subdivisions for exact duty rates and regulatory requirements.
Accurate HS classification is vital for trade compliance, especially given ferrovanadium's strategic importance in defense, automotive, and renewable energy sectors. Proper coding also facilitates tracking of global supply chains and adherence to export control regimes where applicable.
