What is the difference between silicon and ferrosilicon?
Silicon and ferrosilicon are two different materials, and the main differences are in the following areas:
Chemical composition
Silicon is a non-metallic element, and the purity of industrial silicon usually reaches 97%-99%
Ferrosilicon is an alloy of iron and silicon, with a silicon content of generally more than 72% (e.g., FeSi75-B grade)

Production process
Industrial silicon is smelted by quartz and coke in a mineral heat furnace
Ferrosilicon smelting requires the addition of steel chips and strict control of iron content

Physical Properties
Industrial silicon has better electrical and thermal conductivity, and is suitable for semiconductors and other high-precision fields
Ferro silicon is harder, with a melting point between 1300-1330°C and a density only about half that of iron

Main Applications
Industrial silicon: semiconductor, photovoltaic, silicone compound manufacturing and other high-tech industries
Ferrosilicon: iron and steel industry deoxidizer, alloy additives, foundry industry inoculant, etc.

Price and purity
Because of the high purity requirements, the price of industrial silicon is usually higher than that of ferrosilicon
High-grade ferrosilicon (e.g., 75#) is non-magnetic and has a blue appearance.

Although there are intersections between the two (e.g. chemical applications), silicon serves high-tech industries, while ferrosilicon focuses on traditional industries. Although the production equipment are both mineral heat furnace, but the raw material ratio and process control differences are significant.
