Ferrophosphorus, an alloy of iron and phosphorus (typically containing 20–26% phosphorus), is mainly used as a deoxidizer and phosphorus additive in steelmaking. It helps remove oxygen from molten steel, improving purity and quality. In some special steels and cast irons, the phosphorus it provides enhances strength, machinability, and corrosion resistance. It is also used in phosphate production and as a reducing agent in metallurgical processes. Ferrophosphorus is generally considered a by-product of phosphorus production in electric arc furnaces.
