What are the uses of ferroalloys?

What are the uses of ferroalloys?

Ferroalloys are mainly used as steelmaking additives in industry, and their core uses include:
Deoxidizers
Ferrosilicon, ferromanganese, etc. are used to remove oxygen and sulfur from molten steel to improve the strength and purity of steel (silicon has outstanding deoxidation ability, and manganese has a desulfurization effect).
Alloying element additives
Different elements give steel properties:
Ferrosilicon: Improves the elasticity and magnetic conductivity of steel, used in structural steel, spring steel and transformer silicon steel (silicon content 0.15%~3.5%);
Ferromanganese: Enhances toughness and wear resistance, used in high-strength alloy steel, rails and automotive parts;
Ferrochrome: Improves corrosion resistance (oxidation film is formed when chromium ≥12%), used in stainless steel and medical devices;
Ferromolybdenum: Improves high-temperature strength, used in high-temperature parts of aircraft engines.
Casting nucleus inoculant
Refines the grain size of castings and improves mechanical properties (such as improving graphite dispersion).
Reducing agent‌
Silicon-chromium alloy is used to produce medium and low carbon ferromanganese, and ferrosilicon is used to reduce ferromolybdenum, ferrovanadium, etc.

How to make ferro vanadium?

Example of ferrovanadium manufacturing process (aluminothermic method)
Ingredients: Mix V₂O₅, aluminum powder, lime and fluorite in proportion;
Reduction: Ignite in the reactor to trigger a self-propagating reaction to produce ferrovanadium alloy and slag;
Separation: Crushed after cooling, and magnetic separation to separate the alloy and slag phases;
Refining: Secondary smelting to remove impurities if necessary;
Molding: Cast and cool into ingot or granular products.

Note: The process selection depends on the product requirements (such as vanadium content, impurity control). The aluminothermic method is suitable for high purity requirements, and the electrosilicon thermal method is more economical and environmentally friendly.

What is the process of ferrovanadium?

What is the raw material of ferrovanadium?

1. Core raw materials

Vanadium pentoxide (V₂O₅): the main vanadium source, usually obtained from vanadium-titanium magnetite through vanadium extraction process (such as sodium/calcification roasting);
Reducing agent: aluminum (aluminothermic method), ferrosilicon (silicon thermal method), carbon (carbon reduction method), etc.;
Auxiliary materials: lime (CaO), fluorite, etc. are used to reduce the melting point and viscosity of slag.

2. Mainstream production process

Aluminothermic reduction method
Process: Mix V₂O₅ with aluminum powder, ignite to initiate reduction reaction (2/5 V₂O₅ + 4/3Al → 4/5V + 2/3Al₂O₃), add lime to adjust the slag phase fluidity, and crush it after cooling to obtain ferrovanadium alloy.
Features: Suitable for the production of high ferrovanadium (vanadium content 80%), the reaction is violent and temperature control is required.
Electrosilicothermic reduction method
Process: Reduce V₂O₅ with ferrosilicon in an electric arc furnace (2/5V₂O₅ + Si + 2CaO → 4/5V + 2CaO·SiO₂), supplemented by lime slag making, separate the slag and gold and cast it.
Features: Low energy consumption, low pollution, few impurities in the product, suitable for medium and low carbon ferrovanadium.
Carbon reduction method
Process: V₂O₅ reacts with coke in a high-temperature electric furnace (2/5V₂O₅ + 2C → 4/5V + 2CO).
Limitations: It is easy to generate vanadium carbide to reduce the purity of the alloy, and it is less used.

3. Environmental protection process trend

Calcification roasting vanadium raw materials: replace the traditional sodium method, avoid chlorine pollution, and the wastewater can be recycled (such as CaCO₃ roasting conversion rate> 72%).
